Film Screening: The Passion of Joan of Arc

In 1431, Joan of Arc was taken in cuffs to the citadel at the French city of Rouen, where she stood trial in front of clergy members working in the service of the occupying British. Her humility in the face of insults quieted her accusers’ anger. She was judged to be a heretic and was burned at the stake amidst a shouting crowd. In this silent cinema masterpiece, Carl Theodor Dreyer employs the actors’ facial expressions in a deeply affective manner that takes us on a voyage into his characters’ souls—despite the lack of sound.

The film La Strada (The Road) tells the story of Gelsomina, a simple girl sold by her mother to Zampanò, a savage and rough travelling performer known for his muscles that can burst through metal wire. The dreamy and naïve Gelsomina tries to take Zampanò’s moodiness and cruelty into account, but one day, the duo meets Il Matto, a cheerful acrobat and philosopher who is very much unlike Zampanò. In this film, Fellini goes beyond the ordinary in Italian real-life cinema, creating a poetic style that approaches popular superstition. The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1957.

Lecture: Racialised Exclusion: Investigating State Violence in Europe and North America

Presenting on Forensic Architecture’s recent investigations of police brutality and the relationship between racialised bodies and violence at the border, this public lecture outlines the methodologies and techniques employed in The Killing of Harith Augustus and Pushbacks on the Evros-Meric Border. This lecture is presented as part of the Forensic Architecture: Assembled Practices exhibition, and will be conducted by researcher Christina Varvia.

The Young and the Damned takes place in a Mexican slum in the 1950s, where the film’s hero, Pedro, switches between a responsible life and a life of criminality, while his older and more attractive friend Jabo chose the path of criminality. An unintended murder, however, will change Pedro's life. The Young and the Damned is one of the most powerful films of the brilliant Spanish film director Luis Buñuel, who filmed it with a limited budget and with only amateur actors.

Book Launch: Isabella Hammad's "The Parisian"

The Parisian tells the story of a pivotal period in Palestinian history through the life of a young man from Nablus named Midhat Kamal. Midhat, the son of a wealthy merchant, studies in France during the First World War and returns to Palestine after the defeat of the Ottoman Empire and the beginning of British rule. Through the stories of Midhat and his relatives, friends and enemies, the novel explores ideas of identity, enduring love and the relationship between knowledge and power, and paints a picture of life in Palestine before the Nakba.

In the early 1970s, a middle-class French family sits at the television and watches a show about Palestinian fighters in their daily lives while training in southern Lebanon. The film challenges the viewer with a number of questions about audio-visuals, their relation to political struggle and our concept of that struggle. It is a stunning reflection of the ability of audio-visuals to shape and reshape reality and a remarkable lesson in reading and exploring the language of cinema and television and its masterful deconstruction. The film raises fundamental questions on the Palestinian issue that still resonate with us today.

Art Project: Night Shift

Night Shift is a project developed by the nomadic work and presentation platform Gouvernement, associated partner of [muṯallaṯ], and combines artists from different backgrounds and disciplines by offering them an artistic wild card as well as an eclectic, public platform which is part of an established art organisation. Via an informal setting and by evoking a creative playground, they are free to present projects ranging from finished and crossover projects to thrilling experiments and try-outs, while triggering new relations with the public.
