The first instalment in the ground-breaking Apu Trilogy, Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road) is a deceptively simple and even slight story, made remarkable for fully inhabiting the world of its young protagonist.

Apu, a small boy, lives with his impoverished family in rural West Bengal. His father, a priest lost in dreams of writing plays and poetry, is too soft-spoken and shy to ask his employer for his well-earned pay. Meanwhile, Apu’s mother is mired in the daily tasks of motherhood: looking after him and his sister Durga while struggling with her demanding in-laws and an idealistic husband.

17 July 2019

Film Screening: Life is Sweet (1990)

Time and Location: at A.M. Qattan Foundation's Building in Al-Tira, Ramallah, at 6:00 p.m.

103 mins. | +16 | English with Arabic subtitles | United Kingdom

Director: Mike Leigh

Tracing the working-class malaise of suburban London, this comedy-drama focuses on twin sisters Natalie and Nicola, who couldn’t be more different. Natalie, ever the enterprising and optimistic soul, trudges away at a dreary job, but is hopeful that better things lie in wait. Nicola, on the other hand, is on the dole and deeply pessimistic, doubtful that things could ever change.

Life is Sweet proved to be a pivotal work in establishing Mike Leigh’s career who, up until that point, was held in high regard for his work in television and smaller, independent films – but nothing prepared audiences for this revelatory work which debuted in 1990.

Film Screening: Naked (1993)

Time and Location: at A.M. Qattan Foundation's Building in Al-Tira, Ramallah, at 6:00 p.m.

131 mins.| +18 | English with Arabic subtitles | United Kingdom

Director: Mike Leigh

Arguably Mike Leigh’s most underrated and radical work, Naked tells the brilliantly divisive story of a restless and violent drifter, Johnny. Rejecting anyone who might care for him, Johnny shambles around London on a nocturnal odyssey, colliding with a succession of other desperate and dispossessed people while scorching everyone in his path. With a virtuoso script and raw performances from the film’s leads, Naked is a black and comical look at England’s seedy underbelly.
