An Arabic translation of philosopher Jacques Rancière’s book, The Ignorant Schoolmaster: Five Lessons in Intellectual Emancipation (original title Le Maître ignorant: Cinq Leçons sur l'Émancipation Intellectuelle), was recently released by the Qattan Centre for Educational Research and Development (QCERD). The translation was carried out by Dr Azzeddine Khattabi within the framework of the Comprehensive Development of Kindergartens Project in Jerusalem, which funded by the Arab Fund for Economic & Social Development through the Welfare Association.

This book is part of the Publications in Philosophy and Education Series. Rancière draws his ‘five lessons’ from the experience of Joseph Jacotot, a teacher who worked in child education for more than 30 years. The book explores the issue of liberty in education and the relationship between teachers and students. It argues that education should be about teaching what we do not know, rather than what we know.
