On 26 March 2018, the Child Centre – Gaza (CCG) / A. M. Qattan Foundation concluded the Hour of Code events. Organised on 20-26 March 2018, Hour of Code was tailored to spread the programming culture and introduce children to the basics of programming.
Hour of Code events were launched with the participation of male and female students of the American School in Gaza. To promote their problem solving skills, students learned the principles of programming language through a collection of customised interactive educational games.
The CCG also organised 12 Hour of Code encounters, which brought members of the CCG Programmers’ Club together with male and female students of the Asma Elementary School, Al-Majidah Wasilah Bin Ammar Preparatory School, and Tal al-Sultan Preparatory School of Rafah.
On 18 March 2018, the final day of the Hour of Code event, students of the Rosemary Sisters School participated in the Technology Lab at their school. Almost 280 male and female students of participating schools benefited from the Hour of Code event.
On her participation in the Hour of Code events, Jazeel Humeid, a 7th grade student, described programming as “a new world”. Jazeel said: “I have learned interesting things in the field of programming today. I know how much programmers around the world are tired when they make simple games in order to please and benefit others.”
About the one-hour programming class he attended, Wasim Uleiwah, a 7th grade student, said: “An hour of fun and benefit at the same time. I have learned to solve riddles and trained myself to concentrate, challenge, and be patient.”
Launched by Code.org in 2013, Hour of Code is the largest educational and technological event worldwide. In a one-hour tutorial, Hour of Code attracts millions of students from across the globe to learn the basics of programming, using fun and simple techniques, such as educational games.
Around the year, the CCG offers a collection of focused activities, programmes and courses in the field of programming. These include I-Code, Scratch, and MIT App Inventor courses. Programmes include Robot Engineering and Smart Electronics. Of the activities it implemented recently, the CCG Programmers’ Clubs also introduced member children to the PYTHON programming language.
