Ramallah – AMQF hosted educator and researcher Munir Fasheh on February 11, 2017 for a talk about his latest book, My Story with Math. Fasheh was introduced by author and researcher Muhannad Abed Al-Hamid.
During the talk, Fasheh presented his new book, which was published last year by the Tamer Institute for Community Education, and in which he narrates his experience teaching mathematics, explains the concept of “neighboring” and highlights the importance of wisdom and contemplation in education. He raised a number of issues addressed in his book and insisted that “liberating the mind from enslavement is the foundation for liberation from all other forms of subjugation.”
Abed Al-Hamid noted that in his book, “Fasheh highlights the importance of reviving wisdom in education and introducing the concepts of “neighboring” in the learning process”. He added, “Fasheh also suggests rethinking the existing education system and rejects the dichotomies it entails: successful vs failed, winner vs loser, and so on, which could lead to disastrous consequences.”
Azmi Shinnara, Head of the Library Unit at AMQF, emphasized the importance of the new ideas presented in Fasheh’s book. “The book raises issues that are being discussed for the first time,” he said. “It sheds light on the existing educational process as one that stuffs our brains with illusions that have no connection with reality.”
Tariq Matar, who attended the talk, said, “Fasheh proposes an unconventional concept of education and advocates new methods of learning and teaching, especially in the fields of science and math, that are capable of opening new horizons”.
Munir Fasheh earned a PhD in Education from Harvard University in 1988. He has long years of experience in education and learning in Palestine as well as a number of Arab and non-Arab countries. He is the founder of the Arab Education Forum and has published several books and articles.
