Opening of the Exhibition Echo (On Sound and Its Phenomena)
Time and Location: at Jacques Chirac St., Al-Irsal - Ramallah , From 11:00 a.m Till 6:00 p.m.
The Science Studio, the Educational Research and Development Programme of the A.M. Qattan Foundation will open a scientific, artistic, communal and interactive exhibition on the phenomena of sound and hearing physics, soundscape in natural and urban acoustic environments, sound in musicology and musical instruments and sonification, the analysis and study of acoustic fields in scientific, engineering, biological, social and historical settings. This exhibition is the result of several months of study and is a joint effort between developers and specialists in the world of sound and music.The exhibition activities will run throughout the month of October 2019. The exhibition programme will be shared with you soon on the "Science Studio" Facebook page .

Hetalieh
Time and Location: at A.M. Qattan Foundation in Al-Tira, Ramallah, at 6:00 p.m.
Hetalieh is the story of Yousef, a small child from Bethlehem, whose biggest dream is to have a big bowl of Hetalieh, a traditional Palestinian dessert. Although his parents can hardly afford such luxuries, Yousef and his parents are preparing a huge portion of Hetalieh today. It disappears inexplicably and the boy is in big trouble.
Three actors onstage tell the story using just two colours: black and white. Using wooden blocks, tablets, cushions and simple puppets, the actors create Yousef’s world seamlessly. The performance aims to familiarise young children with the theatre.

MahraJazz - Amir Elsaffar & The Two Rivers Ensemble

Composer, trumpeter, Persian santur player and vocalist Amir ElSaffar has been described as “uniquely poised to reconcile jazz and Arabic music” (The Wire) and “one of the most promising figures in jazz today” (The Chicago Tribune). ElSaffar is an expert trumpeter with a classical background, conversant not only in the language of contemporary jazz, but has created techniques to play microtones and ornaments idiomatic to Arabic music that are not typically heard on the trumpet. Additionally, he is a purveyor of the centuries old, now endangered, Iraqi Maqam tradition, which he performs as a vocalist and santur player.

Artist Talk: Javiar Toscano
Time and Location: at A.M. Qattan Foundation in Al-Tira, Ramallah, at 5:00 p.m.
Toscano will elaborate on his work during his two-month residency. His project develops visual and technical research on water politics in the West Bank and Gaza. The point of departure will be maps and other images that show the control of water as a vital resource by a colonial power. He will set up walks and technical explorations to search for for visual evidence on the field. All of this will lead to self-made cartography. The aim will also be to produce audio-visual images of the landscape and water infrastructure, and most importantly, stories about people and their everyday relation to water as a scarce resource.

MahraJazz - No Tongues

No Tongues are an exciting and adventurous young French quartet who find inspiration in vocal traditions across the globe. Through instrumentals, they celebrate song cultures, whether through Northern European songs about ploughing, remote tribal Indian burial hymns, Inuit wedding songs or Siberian psalms. Their performances provide a stylistic diversity in music that can be atmospheric, trance-like and oddly shamanic.
No Tongues perform with two double basses, a trumpet, saxophone and other objects utilised to manipulate the approach of each instrument. They often perform in masks and their stage presence is both musically and visually captivating.

Musical Performance: Living Room Rumor- Fátima Miranda

As a counterpoint to the invasion of digital technology, all the manner of gadgets that electronic music and sound art depend and whose technologies can facilitate concerts with barely any physical gesture, the Living Room Rumor is an intimate a capella performance art piece in which Fátima Miranda is one single body with hardly any wires.
The Living Room Rumor presents a single voice supported by a refined poetic, gestural, visual and humorous component. The Living Room Rumor fluctuates from contemplative, melancholic, dramatic and ritualistic to frantic, fun and trancelike.

Lecture: Aerial Cartography at the Threshold of Detectability - Eyal Weizman

As part of the public programme’s project, “Palestine from above,” Weizman demonstrates how the use of aerial imaging is manipulated to erase the colonised. Instead of leaving gaps in maps or renaming places, pixel and grain sizes are manipulated to read inconvenient truths out of historical aerial images.

MahraJazz - Jim Black’s Malamute

Drummer Jim Black is an exponent of experimental jazz at the cutting edge. An extraordinary drummer and technician who knows no bounds, his latest project brings him together with some of America’s top avant-garde players. It’s strange, different and can be utterly compelling.
Shortly after breaking into the progressive jazz scene in the 90s via his work with established musicians and ensembles, Black’s signature stylistic approach to the kit ignited much interest. Simply stated, Black has a quirky off-beat approach and an uncanny sense of time while often staying on top of the pulse, creating an atmospheric unpredictable sensation.

MahraJazz - Lecture then perfomance: Akua Naru

Akua Naru is a hip pop artist, producer, activist and scholar, who theorizes the myriad experiences of Black women through rhyme along a sonic spectrum from jazz to soul. She has released four albums—three of which were on the label she co-founded, The Urban Era.
Akua Naru’s journey to global poet began in an early upbringing in the Pentecostal church. Her powerful poetic lyricism, talent for storytelling and ability to integrate historical narratives into her music with unmatched eloquence have drawn the attention of scholars and activists around the globe.

Underground on the Surface is an award-winning documentary about the Egyptian music genre Mahraganat. The documentary follows Oka, Ortega and Wezza, three musicians well-known in the Egyptian music scene. It shows the challenges they faced as young artists, from their childhoods in impoverished neighbourhoods to achieving stardom, ultimately representing a marginalised people.

Opening of Raeda Saadeh’s exhibition: YAYA in Focus
Time and Location: at A.M. Qattan Foundation in Al-Tira, Ramallah, at 7:00 p.m.
Raeda was the youngest artist amongst the ten participants in the first edition of the award. Her artwork was remarkably daring in terms of dealing with marriage as a point of transformation in a woman’s life, and of occupying an entire small apartment A.M Qattan used as a guest house.
This retrospective exhibition depicts Saadeh’s artistic journey in the past two decades, allowing the audience in Palestine to engage with her rich experience. Also, through this exhibition, the A.M Qattan contemplates the path and legacy of the YAYA as well as its impact after accomplishing its tenth edition. This endeavour is to ponder the route and the form the YAYA is going to take in the future.

Charlie Banks is on what seems to be a neverending search for steady employment. But there are no jobs and his near-constant unemployment is taking a toll on him and his family. His wife, Andais, is worn out taking care of their young children. In an effort to contribute what he can, Charlie takes simple day jobs like painting houses and at night collapses in exhaustion in the bathtub.
